Creating your Reality

Can our thoughts and beliefs really affect our reality?

Well, let’s consider this concept for a moment and wonder what the possibilities are.

In our everyday life our brain and senses are bombarded by an enormous amount of information and different experiences. Say like me, you’re a working parent, you wake, you think about what your day involves, you prepare your kids breakfast, pack their lunches, wonder if they have their homework, sign permission notes, make sure they’re complying with the school uniform policy, get them out the door and in the car, ensure they’re buckled in safely, navigate the early morning traffic and drop them safely at school. Then as you continue on to work, you’re mentally preparing for your meetings and other daily responsibilities and it’s not even 9am. I won’t bore you with the rest of the daily agenda, but consider just how many things you need to think about before your day even really begins.

Do you wake up and jump out of bed with a spring in your step, ready to welcome and embrace the days opportunities or do you wake and try to steal another few moments in bed, avoiding the kids arguing over what cereal they want and who gets to sit in the front seat on the way to school?

It’s funny because there’s so many sayings like “well, look who woke up on the wrong side of the bed” or “I really shouldn’t have gotten out of bed this morning, I knew it was going to be a crap day and what do you know, it’s gone down hill since then!! The law of attraction can work both ways, depending on how you perceive things.

There most definitely are those amazing people that wake up, throw on their running gear and go for a run or walk on the beach, breathing in the crisp fresh air and witnessing that amazing and magical moment as the sun rises out of the ocean and pours it’s warmth and stunning light onto the world. And there most definitely are those amazing people that live each day as if it were Groundhog Day, those that feel stuck, that life is dull, grey, routine and not at all exciting. But the interesting thing is, that the morning was the same in both situations! It’s a universal truth that each day the sun will rise and as each evening approaches the sun will set.

So, why can two people that are in the same situation, experience things so completely differently? Well it all comes down to our own individual, Internal representation of that same information, and that is determined by what we each think and believe is important enough to actually take in, then our brain deciphers that information and links it to our previous experiences and feelings and encodes that interpretation to spit out a relevant response.

As a Kinesiologist and NLP Trainer, I’ve been very fortunate to witness how even the slightest change in our perception can affect a change in our reality. These changes can be as small as the language we use when we communicate with ourselves and others. How different does it sound if you listen to the weather report in the morning and they say “today is going to be 28 degrees and partly cloudy” compared to ” today is going to be 28 degrees and mostly sunny” wow!!! It’s exactly the same information, but the change in language elicits a different response. What about, when someone asks you, how you are? Would your usual response be “not bad” how does that compare to “pretty good” or if they asked a favour from you, a common response is “No worries”, what would happen if it was replaced with “Sure, too easy”.

Our unconscious mind is marvellous, its main objective is to keep us safe and ensure that our bodily functions happen automatically without any real conscious effort, attention or interference. We don’t consciously tell our lungs when to breathe, our heart to beat or our stomach to process the food we’ve eaten. These functions all happen without our conscious input. But did you know that our unconscious mind doesn’t know the difference between what is real and what is imagined. TV shows, dreams, the images that are conjured when you read a book, meditations, video games and real life events are all processed equally. It doesn’t have a verbal language but rather processes all information visually, with pictures and symbols. It’s unable to process a negative word like “not” or “don’t” but rather encodes the word or sentence with an image and often, a feeling or experience.

So, when you hear “not bad” your unconscious mind focuses on the images & experience of “bad” and saying “no worries” will elicit an unconscious state of worry. Then what you’ll discover is that your energy levels & bodily functions will respond to that experience and as the prime directive of the unconscious mind is to serve and protect you, it will keep you in that state of reality. Amazing!! Right?? Did you ever consider how what you say and think could have such an impact of your life?

This is just scratching the surface of the unlimited potential that you are. When you learn to consciously be aware of the impact of your thoughts and beliefs, you realise that you’re in control, you’re the master of your own destiny. You’ll be able to go to the shopping centre with the clear belief that a car space will open up for you just at the right time. That life will provide opportunities for you. You’ll start to replace old belief systems with new and improved thoughts. That you are worthy of great relationships and a satisfying and well paid job, that you are valued and that all your actions are making a difference to your life and family! And yes, your life will change!! You will affect your reality! You will wake up one morning, take in that magical sunrise and see the world as completely different!! And the power of change is all within you, so go out there and make your dreams a reality!!
